Abel’s Field–Redbox Hit!

home_dvd
Looking for a movie tonight at Redbox? We saw Abel’s Field in our local kiosk. (Check to see if your Local Kiosk Has it!) It is story of two lives that intertwine and end up saving each other.  One a young student, raising his sisters on his own.  One a lone man working for the school. Their journey together throughout about a year’s time is compelling.  It pulls you in quickly and leaves you wanting and longing until the end.
My boys and I watched this together in the afternoon. My oldest stayed with it, (15), and my youngest wondered off (12). It’s not really a feel good movie. It’s gritty. There are emotions. The characters are in situations that make you sort of scream at the screen. And although a faith based company puts these out, the lives portrayed are not goody goody and whole. There were a few times that I wanted to just call a few characters from the movie and give them a what for.
We have had a lot of bad luck with Redbox movies – this movie I can gladly recommend.

But fighting back only finds him singled out for punishment and assigned to an after-school work detail under the supervision of the reserved groundskeeper, Abel (SOUL SURFER’S Kevin Sorbo). Much to his surprise, Seth discovers that Abel may be the only one who truly understands his struggles. As dark times lure Seth toward desperate measures, the reluctant Abel may be the one person who can point him back toward the light.

Link to Etched Upon My Heart

I was able to review this book the past few weeks.  I have opened it, read a couple of chapters, and then set it down.  I like her writing style. I love her passion. Her history is heart warming and breaking all at the same time. However, I just couldn’t get into it. I do have friends with girls who have stated that it was the best book they have read in a long time and they are thrilled to have it to help them with their daughters. I’m not sure if that was the disconnect for me? Having sons? Jill Kelly’s story is wonderfully written. It will speak to your heart. I could have been in a funk when reading it, or busy, or with my cold. I really wanted to enjoy this book as much as my friends did. I will pick it up again.

“Heartfelt and honest, this book overflows with the deep desires and inspired longings I have for the two young girls I love beyond words. It addresses the common passion, hopes, and dreams that every mother has for her children.”

From the Publishers:

Lord, I Give You This Day

Lord, I Give You This Day

Lord, I Give You This Day by Kay Arthur

I’m on day 22 of this little devotional book. Hard bound with a pretty ribbon to mark my day. Slightly larger than the spread of my hand, it fits in my bag or on my chair table. Since I’ve had it, each day has infused God’s word and a bit of encouragement into my day.

A few mornings ago we were talking about a character / sin issue in our home. And I said we’d do some bible study about it later. I went into my room to pray, be still, take a ‘mom time out’. I opened “Lord, I Give You This Day”.  It was January 16, I read these words:

Keep these questions before you today: Can a person really be saved and deny God’s right to rule over his life? Can you call Him “Lord,” refuse to do the thing he tells you to do and still go to heaven? Read Matthew 7:21-27 and meditate on Jesus’ words.

I called the boys in later, we read the day’s devotion together and read Matthew and another suggested verse in Luke 6:46 – Why do you call Me, ‘Lord,Lord,’ and do not do what I say?”

My son sort of gasped.  “How did it know?”  The Bible is living and breathing. The Holy Spirit anxious to bring us closer.

I love little devotional books. I own several. However, I see a trend in authors to want to bestow little happy thoughts to the reader. I don’t want a little happy thought book. That’s why God created Facebook. ha. I want to be encouraged, In the Word. I want to be admonished – In the Word. Exhorted in the Word. Hugged – In the Word.

When I saw that Kay Arthur, the one that turned my whole heart to the Word, had a daily devotional – “366 Appointments with God”, I knew it would be full of His Word, and less of hers. I am glad, so glad, that I was not disappointed.

Are you in a busy season? Need a simple way to be in the word daily?  This may be what you are looking for.  I encourage you to check it out!

The Utter Relief of Holiness

The Utter Relief of Holiness, by John Eldredge, was offered to me by FlyBy Promotions to read and review. I thought about it. To be honest, John Eldredge has not always been a favorite author of mine. He is raw. The first book I read seemed unpolished. Jagged. It was back when I as more concerned with ‘looking’ like a Christian, and had not spent time just trying to ‘be’ one. Have you been there?  If you are a Christian you have to look and act a certain way? If you are a preacher you have to speak a certain way. Clean. Spiritual. Biblical. Focused.

We started going to a congregation that spoke to the men in the audience – in a language that they could understand. Knowing that all men walking through the doors are not 20 year seasoned deacons of biblical studies. I remember that first Sunday when they spoke of Halloween, (Did they just use that word in a church service??) and talked of who Satan is. The lights went out and a scene from Star Wars played. Darth Vader, walking towards us.  The pastor comments – “Satan is not going to come to your house, in a Darth Vader suit, theme music playing – with a horrid case of asthma, he’s much trickier than that”.

And such it is with John Eldredge. He knows what you struggle with. He knows what movies you identify with. He shares from that point. I have grown to enjoy the style of living my Sunday – the same way I live my Tuesday.

As my walk has grown, so has my peace, hope and joy. Which brings us back around to this book -

What if? What if the one thing that you struggle with the most, were no longer a struggle? What kind of relief would that bring?  Simple/hard things, for me would be car maintenance. Extra money after bills. Losing the desire to have a sweet snack before bed. Anxiety attack at quickly changed plans. Anger when being lied to.  What an utter relief to not have these little things in my life.

What about Holiness?  Do you struggle trying to Be Holy? Have you ever even tried? John balances the need for us to be whole, in order to be Holy. To be Holy, one needs to be whole.  I was worried that I might not have time to finish the book before the review date – and that wasn’t a problem. I read it in 2 days. I have a list of people I want to lend the book to.

Laid out in 2 sections, the Surprise of Holiness and The Way to Holiness, John gives simple identifiable goals to be whole and holy.

I have  hard time – thinking of parts to share. I’d love to share the question on Chapter 5, but it was a surprise to me. That he would ask it, after convincing us we knew the answer. and then, point blank asking – wow. But if I shared the question with you, it would ruin the build up . I’m still pondering it. I find myself asking the question, searching, as I’m driving or walking the beach this week.

We had an issue with living with holiness with the boys, and in “Choosing the Way of Holiness”, I had to stop and read a few pages to the boys.  On page 111, John shares a visual of leaning into Jesus, holiness.  Using Snowboarding as an example, the three of us understood. Standing at the top of the snow hill. Watching so many elated snowboarders enjoy the slope.  Yet, standing up, on this small board, one must lean back, while heading straight down, the idea that gravity would have you on your rear, pulls at you to lean forward too far, it’s a balance. Somewhat like riding a bike, when you get it, its yours, and the joy is yours, but you have to lean. He went on to talk about surfing, our current passion. He shares:

“I’ve watched friends who are surfers, and it’s the same dynamic. There is a moment when you have to commit; you have to go with the wave or not. yes, there is some paddling on your part, but when the wave picks you up, your choice is to let it, to go with it, to accept its power and let it hurl you forward. you don’t create the wave; the wave power is utterly beyond you. Once it has you in its mighty grip, your part is to cooperate. Then the beauty comes. Holiness works the same way. What I mean is this: The Power is not ours. The power comes from God, from the presence of the living Jesus Christ inside us. He is the wave.  If we think we have to paddle fast enough to create the entire experience, we will end up frustrated and exhausted from all the striving The name for that is Religion. God offers something far better: “Let me be the wave.” “Quote by John Eldredge.

Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed – not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence – continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose. Philippians 2:12-13.

The boys and I identify with this at a base core level. I started stand up paddling a year ago. I can’t tell you how strange it is for my body to stand up on a thin board, in a cold lake. It took me days to try. I’d sit, kneel, but not stand. Once I did decide to stand it was near a dock, clinging to the ladder as I stood more with the support, than trusting the board to hold me. I was sure that as soon as I stood up, I’d be flipped into the cold current.  Now, a year later, I can stand up, sit down, lay down, pup up, walk on the board, do a few yoga poses, I even took my wetsuit booties off on the board in the middle of a river once. I can walk off the dock directly onto the board. Besides hitting a dock on a very small race board, I have never accidently fallen off since that first week. I’ve always done something on purpose, to get into the water.

And that is how I feel with this holiness / whole ness issue.  I see many people around me – not even trying to be holy. Or whole. They feel it is for someone else. Those people doing it – they must be more fit, stronger, more agile. In the holiness sense, they must have more experience, more knowledge, a closer deeper walk, they must be better, the must not struggle, so you decide not to even compete. Not to even try. Why try – as soon as you try on the label of holy, you’ll just get knocked over. At least it’s a great view from the shore or the top of the mountain watching others fly by.

Are you tired? Do you struggle with the daily life? I have . I REALLY have this past month.  This book – really helped me to snap out of it. To be whole again. To pursue holiness. To pursue the Love of Jesus. I have so many people I want to just read this book to!

I noticed on the website that there is a buy one get one for a friend free going on. The link is above.

Father of Lights, Wanderlust Productions

Father of Lights

This film – documentary style – pulls in the listeners. I put it in the DVD player. Called the family to check out the beginning – without expectations. Well. That’s not true. I put it in with doubt. With unexpectedness. With an eye to see untruth.

And we began to watch, and listen – it almost felt like we were participating. We could feel That Light come into the home – listen – watch – and pray. That’s what I felt on my heart. My family has watched – putting it on pause when interruptions came.  We stopped it mid way – to soak in the miracles we had seen – and restarted it it this weekend.

I had a hard time knowing what to share with you – outside of an informational review – until this weekend.

We are in the 10th chapter of Acts.  Peter and Cornelius are getting together through dreams and the obedience of traveling – and inviting. People who should never even eat together – come together to praise the gospel – and the Holy Spirit shows up – and the evidence that the Gentiles are included in God’s plan is evident – and people speak in tongues and praise the Lord. The story is retold several times in these couple of chapters.

Which is what is going on in the movie.  People are stopped. Given a vision, given a task – and step out in an unknown faith – willing – able – willing to be put to death. Willing to be stoned, put in a conflict zone.

And this weekend – after the big service encouraging the speaking of the Gospel of Christ – we sing dry feel good songs, we talk of feel good things like God’s Love. And then we wait – hoping that the Holy Spirit moves like He did in Acts. We attend a community service – and I hear the longing – a friend said – ‘I was just waiting for the Holy Spirit to swoop in and show up’.

The only thing – is that we live in the “Comfort Zone.” The Gospel is not new to us. We have no fear in praying for people. We might have embarrassment fear – but not conflict zone fear. Most of us know where the rent is coming, where the food will come from – even if it is from the Government when we lack.

The thing that is most eye opening in this film  - is remembering – or realizing – how far the Gospel of Jesus is to millions of people in other countries.  And being reminded of how little we really go out to share Jesus. Plain. Simple. Do you even know anyone that you would be the first person to introduce Jesus into their life?

And so we sit. I am in a heated home on the lake in a leather chair with the laptop on my lap – hoping to encourage others on the internet – hoping to encourage someone in town – show them the joy and peace that marks the difference of Christ in my life – and I feel so inadequate. So small. Oh that we would live a life – totally dependent on the Gospel of Christ. Totally dependent on Him for healing and provision.

This film series is amazing. I have  friend that travels like this in Napal.  When asked at a gathering why we do not see these miracles here in the US – he simply answered – we don’t need them. By our lives we tell the Holy Spirit that we do not need it. Oh For the love of the Father and His Son and His sacrifice – Simple – Walk by Faith – By those who believe. I invite you to watch this series!

Wanderlust Productions presents Father of Lights

About Father of Lights

FATHER OF LIGHTS chronicles the journey of filmmaker Darren Wilson and his team as they fearlessly travel the globe, far from the daily existence of the typical evangelical believer in the West. By thoughtfully documenting the stories of extraordinary believers and candidly filming miracles, visions and other supernatural occurrences, Wilson engages viewers in modern day examples of the true nature and character of God.

Wilson gives honest access to his own spiritual questions as he tackles the religious misconceptions he has struggled with throughout his life.  “I went into making this film by asking the simple question: who is God? I wanted to know His character, His personality, and who He truly is. To answer this question, we had to peel back the many layers of religious garbage that has been passed onto him through generations. That He is angry. Vengeful. Wrathful. And in general, that He doesn’t like you very much. The truth, as you will see vibrantly in this film, is that He is the most loving, compassionate, and wonderful Father you can imagine.”

About Wanderlust Productions

Against the Tide, Elizabeth Camden

I have a new favorite author! Elizabeth Camden. Wow!  I was drawn in by the beautiful cover and intriguing title – then instantly captivated on the first pages of her book – There is not a minute of the story that you are not begging to know what will happen to Lydia!  A true heroine!  Braving a loss and hardship – pulling herself up – learning several languages, working and earning and saving.  The story has twits and turns – mysteries to be solved – adventures to be had – difficulties to conquer – a perfect weekend read.  The romance part of the book – is slim and slight – just the right amount to pull the characters together to fight for each other. The pull of the agnostic Lydia to want to feel God is powerful – in most stories the whiney leading lady is wishing Christ on her Man – it is the opposite here, strong quiet men show Lydia how to pull through an addiction she doesn’t even recognize. I could go on – I just give this a Two Thumbs Up and know that I will be looking for other titles from Elizabeth Camden. Great, Great read for sure!

But Lydia soon discovers this job is more than it appears. Bane is driven by a secret campaign to end the opium trade, compelled by his troubled past. Twice a Bride, Mona Hodgson

Twice a BrideFrom the Publisher: Packed with heart and faith, Twice a Bride will thrill and inspire historical romance readers who love to lose themselves in the untamed beauty of nineteenth-century Colorado.Willow Peterson is at a crossroads. Standing alone over her father's fresh grave, she ponders the question she's seen etched on everyone else's face. Will this loss send her over the edge too, as her husband's death did? She has come back once from the devastating effects of loss, started fresh in Cripple Creek, Colorado, and might find her second chance at love working as a portrait artist for photographer Trenton Van Der Veer. With help of the spirited Sinclair Sisters, can Willow embrace God's plan to overcome her past and provide a home for her?
From Pebblekeeper: I’m not sure that my review is quite fair – taken from the fact that I jumped into Book 4 without reading 1-3. I didn’t see that fact when I choose it.  One of the selling points for the book is that this story can stand alone, but I am not sure I agree.
The first parts of the story feels like being invited to dinner with a friend.  You arrive at the diner thinking that you will be able to really have a cozy chat, but find out that they invited 15 family members and a few townspeople with them.  You get the feeling that the food is going to be amazing, and you will have a bit of time with your friend, but you have to spend a few minutes getting to know the history of each person at the very large table.
On the plus side, I feel like I learned enough that I’d like to go back and read books 1-3, but if this wasn’t a review book, I don’t think I would have read it straight through without starting with book one.
I did enjoy Willow’s journey. I have read a few books about the first women photographers, so this was an interesting take on a woman portrait painter. I would call this story a historical romance, but not necessarily a Historical Fiction.  I don’t quite believe that these characters would have existed in that time. I like the historical fiction that makes me feel as if I’m looking through a journal of a woman who wrote daily entries. Really seeing how her life played out, and how she lived day by day.  I am finding within my own reading preference, that I no longer enjoy books where the whole starting and ending points are in discovering a single man in town and then marrying him. Isn’t there romance and life and leisure and adventure outside of flirting?
So, like I said above, I thought I’d be walking along side this Female Portrait Painter, but her whole family showed up and mostly, we hug out at a soda fountain eating pecan fudge and flirting on dates. You pretty much know from the first chapter where it is going – but I DID enjoy the ride.
